A modern well-to-do family struggles to maintain “a delicate balance”
between survival and self-destruction when a bitter daughter returns to the
nest after the collapse of her fourth marriage. The much wed Julia shatters
the uneasy peace of her long-married, retired parents, Agnes and Tobias, and
acerbic, unpredictable, and witty alcoholic sister-in-law, Claire. The
situation is further disrupted by the unplanned for, extended visit of Harry
and Edna, longtime friends of the parents.
Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in
1966 and in 1996 won the Tony Award for best revival of a play.
