Another award-winning play and a perfect
story for a late October evening of
theater...
Winner of the 1999 Olivier Award for "Best New Play"
The Outer Critics Circle Award for "Best Play" on Broadway,
and Mr. McPherson won the 1997 Evening Standard Drama Award for "Most
Promising Playwright" for writing The Weir.
It's a windy night in a small pub in rural Ireland. Pub owner Brendon is
not surprised to see the regulars, Jack, Jim and Finbar, come and settle in
for a few pints. Tonight however, they are joined by Valerie, a Dublin woman
moving away from the city who just bought a house from Finbar. The men begin
to tell Valerie that the house is haunted, and they all settle down in the
pub to tell stories of ghosts and fairies, spinning yarns in the old Irish
tradition. But it is Valerie's story that brings them all back to earth with
a sudden lurch. Not just a series of ghost stories, The Weir is fascinating
exploration of community, friendship, and support through adversity.
Come spend the evening down at the pub with Jack, Jim, Finbar, Brendan, and
Valerie. Toss back a pint and enjoy.
 | What the international critics have said about the play
 | "You can even smell the peat smoke...delightfully drawn
characters...You find yourself hanging on to every word" -
Daily Telegraph |
 | "The play works an ingenious spell, just as McPherson's THE WEIR
has done for the past couple of years in London and all across the
country ... A small play, but a large subject, and a dramatic shape
that is a clear advance on THE WEIR. McPherson writes like a
dream..." - Michael Coveney, DAILY MAIL |
 | "Ireland keeps sending us gifted playwrights and none more
promising in recent years that Conor McPherson" - Sunday
Telegraph |
 | "Conor McPherson certainly has a knack for storytelling. And it
is storytelling that is at the heart of The Weir, a chilling study
in human nature and human relationships." - Bill Gorman,
CenterStage, Chicago |
 | "The Weir works for many reasons: because McPherson both honors
and builds on dramatic tradition; because he balances the familiar
and the unexpected; and because his words are strong enough to touch
the audience while allowing space for his actors to work." -
