Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing
This beautiful play by Lee Blessing explores the complex relationship of three generations of intelligent, independent and unique woman. The ties that bind a family are stretched as all three-woman fight against society and each other for their independence. Their conflicts with and their love for each other is brought to life on the stage by Lee Blessing's elegant play.

Roles & Ages (all roles female):

Echo: (To be played by an actress in her late teens to early twenties who can play 16 on stage.) The granddaughter. A National spelling bee champion and every bit as intelligent as her mother and grandmother if not more she fights to pull the two woman of her life together and to make her family whole.

Artie: (To be played by an actress in her 30's to early 40's) The Daughter. She runs away from the non-disciplined and unfocused world of her mother to teach and to work in the disciplined world of science leaving her daughter to be raised by Dorthea. She battles with her inability to touch people or forget them and especially how it affects her relationship or lack of with her daughter.

Dorthea: (To be played by an actress in her 50's.) The grandmother of the family. An independent and powerful woman of unique ideas one of which was that "she could fly using only a pair of homemade wings and classical training." She uses the shield of her eccentricity to live how she pleases in a world that imposes imaginary limits
on a woman based on sex.

Obviously a "family resemblance" is desired during casting. Three generations of woman. Grandmother, Mother, Granddaughter.

Audition format: Cold Readings from the script,
